Custom Instructions let you explain how you prefer to work and communicate. A few precise preferences can make a conversation feel less like starting from zero, especially when the same context matters across many tasks.

Instructions work best when they describe an observable preference—such as concise bullets or plain language—instead of a vague wish to be helpful.

A student can request step-by-step explanations, a manager can ask for action items first, and a multilingual member can describe the language or tone they prefer. The benefit is a more consistent starting point, not a promise that every response will be perfect.
Review instructions as your needs change and avoid placing secrets or information you would not want used as conversational context. Check important responses yourself, particularly when a preference could conflict with the task at hand.
